CLOSED IN 1964 REOPENED FOR THE MILLENIUM 2001

THE CANAL IS TAKEN OVER BY BRITISH WATERWAY WITH THE HELP OF LOTTERY MONEY

The sadly neglected Canal was cleaned up, tow paths were mended and bridges were reopened where they had been filled in as part of the Millenium celebrations.
Kirkintilloch Initiative has been in charge of building a Marina and a footbridge across the canal to the foot of St Ninian's High School playing fields to facilitate the pupils journey to the Whitegates and Lenzie areas.

The Phoenix has arisen from the Old Canal Basin

This construction is situated where Hay's Slipway was and the Old Basin as the above photograph shows. The area will include an Arts & Craft Centre, offices, bar/restaurant.
